The myth about this says that many years ago pirates set off from the east to plunder Amorgo and the rich monastery of Holy Mary Hozoviotissa. As they were sailing along the south coast of Amorgos from cavo Kroukelo towards the monastery, they saw the beautiful beach of halara and anchored to rest.
Holy Mary protected the whole island of Amorgos…on seeing them she petrified their captain and up until today he still stands there. The rest of the crew was frightened by jumping into the sea.
The two ships that were left there were also petrified by Holy Mary and lie there ever since as isles that are named Megalo (big) and Mikro (small) Viokastro at St Anna’s bay.
